Loneliness (Man No. 1, 2 and 3)
[2]

Artist's note: This painting shows man No. 1, 2 and 3: and also the relationship of Earth to His Endlessness. When a person is left on his own, whether in a dungeon or his house, then the realisation of his separateness becomes apparent. People play the radio, television, records, or read books to keep themselves company because they do not want to be alone. When there are no outside distractions then they fill their time with daydreams, pleasant or unpleasant, and the more negative these are the more lonely the person soon becomes.

According to Mr Gurdjieff, the Earth is an ill-fated planet. Here it is depicted hanging in space far from the centre of our galaxy, not knowing where our galaxy is in relation to the centre of the universe. The painting also shows the cyclic law, or law of seven. It is a sombre picture, but the four small white spirals show that although we are far away, we are not forgotten. The black background shows how we are connected with the Absolute on the negative scale.
