Teachings of Mr Gurdjieff

Conscious Labours and
Intentional Suffering

Artist's note: The story of Christ is a description of this discipline. Gurdjieff calls it ‘being-Partkdolg-duty’. When one struggles against the desires and whims of the body and all the other manifestations of the organ kundabuffer one is engaged in conscious labours and intentional suffering. To make a soul you must suffer voluntarily and this cannot be done without some labours. The Buddha said that life is sorrow unceasing with flashes of happiness, while Jesus Christ was said to be a man of sorrow and was never reported to have laughed.
