Sufism has in it all that is necessary for a person to perfect himself, but the limiting factor, as in any field of human endeavour, is what the person himself brings to it. To a great many people Sufism is Whirling Dervishes and dances, but this is only a very minor aspect. The aim of Sufism is self- annihilation, that is, the destruction of one’s ego, which we believe can be achieved only when one has become a balanced human being. Unfortunately most people who attempt this are working from the emotional centre, so instead of destroying the ego they make a new, much stronger ego. At such a point in our quest there can be absolutely no emotionalism at all. When working with the spirit one is in a completely passive state, thus the noughting of oneself is a task done in complete silence, which can never be explained in words.
